Who can tell me about Taos, NM?

Close friends who are semi-retiring to Taos are encouraging my wife and I to move, too (known these people for almost 30 years). We've visited and like the area, climate, landscape, proximity to skiing, etc. We are liking the high desert and it would be a good change after decades in New England. We know it will be hugely different.
Unlike our friends, I'm not retiring for a while yet, and as long as I have a phone and decent internet, I can work from anywhere, so won't need to find a job. I have to travel on biz about 25-30%, but the distance to a good airport (prob ABQ) is not too crazy. The only Saab repair shop seems to be 65 miles away in Santa Fe, but as I do most of my own work anyway this is not terrible.
HOWEVER...
what can any of the Saabnet Possessors of Infinite Knowledge tell me about Taos? The good, the bad, the weird. This is not an imminent move, but we're starting to gather info.
TIA!
