Our kids are mostly gone, just come to visit, and may wind up out west anyway. So that issue is semi-resolved. Won't need to be shuttling them to stuff. Can't decide where we live based entirely on the kids. One may wind up in another country anyway.
Wife and I are both outdoorsy and Taos has a lot to offer that way. I can bike much of the year and the ski season is long--and nearby.
Taos IS remote, but not hugely isolated. It has most of the essentials, and the next town away has more. Santa Fe is 65 miles with still more. ABQ is further, but I don't see much need for a city.
We presently live 65 miles from Boston and almost never go. Even when we lived 12 miles from Boston is was only a place to work. Cities don't have much we care about.
We have considered the southeast but the summer heat and humidity are deal breakers.
