I wouldn't worry so much about whether you resigned or were terminated. My wife got shafted by a new middle manager after being at the same job for 8 years and being awarded employee of the year by the board of directors the year before. Took her about 3 months to find a new job and unemployment insurance (UI)is not very much money. However,if you resign you will not be eligible for it.
The severance package is generous; you should consider taking it. BUT, you should work out what the equivalent is in unemployment insurance (eg. equivalent to how many weeks of UI. If you are highly paid it might be worth taking the package so you can have the health insurance benefit. But if you are healthy and you're not getting the equivalent of 2-3 months UI in the severance, I'd work for two weeks, let them fire you after 3, and then collect UI for as long as it takes to get a new job (up to 26 weeks UI, IIRC.
It's strictly financial. NO smart employer ever gives much more of a reference than confirming that X employee worked here from this date to that date. To much risk of getting sued for slander. The worst they can say is that it didn't work out. I see that you are in Canada - if they don't have UI where you are, well that cinches it. take the money and be done with them
