That came from a guy my wife worked with at an ad agency. Totally accurate.
I have rarely felt secure any place I worked, seeing the political BS, intra-office bickering, ego wars, bosses with their own agendas, and seeing perfectly good people get shunted aside. While there are exceptions, working for someone else basically sucks. And always remember that during the courting/interview phase, a company is trying to sell YOU on how great they are. Reality is usually different.
The place I work now--after years on my own is marginally tolerable, even though my boss is pretty much the pointy-haired boss in the Dilbert cartoon. But it works for now, just not indefinitely.
But OTOH, the adage about being self employed is also true: The #1 employee is a lazy bonehead and his boss is an asshat. haha.
