An regular old antenna is great for local channels. The quality of the picture is actually amazing and better than most cable since there is no compression. $10 bunny ears might work, or you might need something outdoors, or even rooftop, it just depends on where you are. There's a site that will show your range and direction to the stations in your area that might be helpful.
Netflix is great and has a monthly feel, but Amazon, Google and various others have a pay per view model with no monthly fee and more extensive catalogs so you'll want there aps. There are tons of others really depending on your interests.
I recently upgraded my first gen Roku to the latest model and the most useful new feature is being able to search across all channels at one. there are similar websites like 'can I stream it' or what have you. Using the remote to search isn't a huge deal, but the high end model also offers voice search, or you can use a 'virtual remote' on your smart phone that has a keyboard. I'm not sure what your TV offers - probably most of the channels, but the downside is you can't upgrade it to the latest and greatest or even change boxes without tossing your whole TV.
Most likely you can hook it up to wifi, with ethernet slightly preferred. 15mps was more than fast enough for me. If you have faster make sure your router is at least wireless 'N' rated to take advantage of the speed (I had to buy a new one when my cable company upgraded me to 50mps).
