Current studies show that America's youth is increasingly less enthused with cars. More young people see cars as a necessary appliance rather than a toy or status symbol. That's a growing trend - enthusiasm for cars and for driving them is statistically waning.
Secondly, taking people out of the equation does offer the possibility of superior fuel economy - forget about time savings from traffic jams, computers can be very on top of throttle and brake to minimize losses due to people. If you could have a car that kept you safer and cost less to operate, as a person who was not inherently interested in driving, why would you not do it?
Thirdly, Google and Apple (amongst others) are being very aggressive with lawmakers to gain immunity from prosecution in driverless car accidents. If that comes to be true, the landscape of insurance will definitely change. I guess it'll probably suck pretty dramatically for those of us who like to drove ourselves, though. :)
Honestly, I'd be 100% okay with letting a Googlemobile get me to work every day. If I could own and drive cars for fun rather than boring, frustrating commutes that'd be just fine with me. I say bring it on.
