None of that actually refutes what I said, which is that younger people regard cars as appliances rather than toys. I'm not suggesting that young people don't want and/or need cars, but rather they are readily accepting of Sentras and Corollas rather than hungering for and aspiring to BMWs and Mercedes. All the articles you've related only indicate that so-called millennials are going to "buy a new or used car" or that they'd rather "give up social media than their car." I wouldn't suggest otherwise. I'm sure they're all going to buy clothes and would rather give up Facebook than food. That doesn't establish their cost:value balance, and there have been quite a few studies that show exactly that - young people are buying more expensive cars in decreasing numbers because they find it's not worth the sacrifice. Additionally, average miles per year has dropped, with the biggest drops in young people. Young people today are far less likely to "go for a drive" like I might, or my father *definitely* would have. They need to get to work, but they aren't touring the countryside.
The cost of motoring continues to rise, wages stagnate, and cars aren't special. All the factors involved in cars are anti-aspirational. They are necessary, but not a value in and of themselves. I'll bet if you asked most young people if there was a way they could get where they were going comfortably and privately WHILE using social media, they'd be all over it. I mean, seriously, I love driving and have a dozen cars and I'd still love to recapture 40 minutes out of my day commuting. Save up some time for an actual drive through the mountains? You bet.
