I have been talking about its potential since 2012. Having owned one of the first cars capable of keeping in its own lane and follow the car ahead braking and accelearating accordingly, I don't think I will buy another new car for myself without at least semi-autonomous driving capability. Yes, I am into motorsports, but there are times leaving it to the car itself is just so much more relaxing on long-distance driving.
I think the impact of autonomous cars will go far beyond car-buying itself:
1. Commute will be much less of a hassle: the passenger can read, exercise or even taking shower or cooking dinner! while riding in the car. People can buy their homes much farther away from their work place, or go to work much farther away from their homes. This has the potential of significantly changing real estate prices.
2. Taxi/Uber/Lyft service will be much much cheaper, making ownership of car unnecessary for many urban and suburban residents, along with making much of public transportation, commuter rail, and even short-haul flights obsolete.
3. City center parking lots that charge $500/mo parking fee, like in NYC, will be obsolete, giving room to more apartments and condos, even as the demand for downtown condos drop due to ease of commute.
4. Long haul trucks will be automated (this will probably happen even faster than passenger cars, as each driver costs $80k a year), potentially making goods delivery less expensive, yet potentially spawning a new generation of highwaymen hijacking autonomous trucks that have no drivers.
