Hey Landjet - if you didn't see this post of mine from a few years back, it was my entry to most interesting Saab driving experience on this board, the stroy is absoultely true and not embellished. Someone who has driven both sides of Independence Pass might appreciate this - happened in 1986 on a Friday evening - I'm sure today road would be too busy for this to happen , we were headed up to Snowmass Lake where back in the day one could take 20" rainbows from the lake without working hard at it. different story today.
Heading toward Aspen in spring of 1986 with a friend for some fly fishing, driving up Rt 82 on the east side of Independence Pass at a spirited pace.
Suddenly in the rear view a BMW 530 series appears, and proceeds to blow by me on a straight stretch of road, with a wave from the driver. My friend and I exchange glances, and I increase speed. Catch up to the BMW, blow by him and he attempts to pursue, but I leave him in the distance on the steep and twisting upper reaches of Independence Pass.
Continuing to drive fast, we proceed down the west side of the pass, and as we had been enjoying numerous liquid refreshments on the way, my friend asks to pull over. I see a turn-off, pull off and we get out of the car to relieve ourselves. A short time passes, and we begin to hear a car and squealing tires. Somehow the BMW driver sees the 9000, brakes and pulls off and parks behind me. My friend and I put our instruments back in place, and prepare for an expected altercation. The BMW driver and passenger get out of the car, walk towards us, and the driver exclaims " now I understand why your Saab is one of Car and Driver's 10 Best." He extends his hand, we shake, he pauses to look longingly at the 9000, then gets back into the BMW and drives off.
My friend and I tell this story and share laughs at out annual Colorado Elk hunt.
