Our neighborhood is almost turning into a retirement community. The subdivision was constructed starting in '78 with a surprising number of the original young couple buyers still in residence. We moved here in 1981 as the thrd owners of a two year old home. There is a Retired Guys Coffee Club in the neighborhood which spends one weekend per month performing common chores on each others homes - such as renting a dethatcher or edger or pressure washer and then going home to home to home to do the task for all the club members.
Friends who live a couple streets behind us have a nearly identical two story home and his 80+ year old mother moved in with them for a while a few years ago. I was surprised how unobtrusive the stair lift was that they installed so she could travel from the first to the second floor. So aging in place here is clearly an option too.
Yes, the cost of many CCRC's is a jaw dropper! Photos posted on-line by these facilities show things such as 60 something couples playing golf (strongly suspected staged photo) or 80 something people in walkers and wheel chairs (not our idea of independent living and just another name for the old Nursing Home).
We do not want to move far away either.
This will likely happen to all of us, just want to start the research or planning now to wrap our heads around the inevitable if or when it becomes necessary to do something.
