A 55+ or older community where people all help each other is the way to go. I can see a 65+ community, too. When one really needs assisted living, then I guess you have to pull the trigger on it, but as us boomers age these for-profit institutions are not a very good answer.
As for us (I'm 66, wife is 62), we could never afford one of the assisted living places, and I'm not sure I'd want to. Been in one when my M-I-L was getting on. It was nice enough, but it was really a bunch of old people waiting to die. No thank you.
I ski with a guy who is 84. He lives a mile from the mountain. He has health issues but just keeps on keeping on. He's an inspiration!
