Many tire shops these days won't just replace a single tire on a AWD vehicle, some will say all 4 tires need to be replaced if one tire has failed. This is a blanket approach to protect for possible liability.

One tire can be replaced if the rotational speed can be a close match to the other tires, otherwise the AWD system thinks wheel slippage is occurring and can be continually activating the AWD system, on mnay of todays AWD system they are designed to be in FWD most of the time .

Subaru's system is a bit different and I think is sending some power to the rear wheels , maybe 10% all the time so the center diff has to be more robust.

Since getting a single tire to match can be problematic, sometimes 2 tires can be replaced but they too need to be close in rotational speed to the other 2 wheels, I think most systems allow for some delta (3% or more) before activating the AWD.

Tire Rack I think gives some decent advice to dealing with these situations on AWD vehicles.
