That you are thinking about this shows how much the dog means to you.
We have had many dogs and I have buried many of them. We have 50 acres of woods and I have buried them back there. The land has a thin coat of soil over marine clay so digging is difficult, and the last time I buried a dog I tore a meniscus, so at my age (65) I am through with that. The last dog that passed was cremeted, and I have also had a dog cremeted who died in the winter.
I resisted cremation like you, but now I don't think it's a bad option. I think I would prefer to have a dog cremeted as opposed to burying it off my property, or somewhere I would be leaving shortly ( I plan to stay where I am until I am removed in a straitjacket :), I don't think the land is feasible to build on, and I plan to give a conservation easement on at least some of it).
With a cremation done by a good Vet you can keep the ashes, and scatter them or keep them with you. That can be meaningful as well, so I would think about that as opposed to an offsite burial. Of course it's an individual decision.
I am sure the dog has had a great life. Good luck.
