Honestly, your idea of refreshing your 9-3 is not a bad one. Nothing else really compares in regards to comfort/feel/power. Sure there are more powerful and engaging cars, but I still giggle when driving my parents very worn out '02 9-3 convertible (disclosure, I'm 40, not a kid).
With that said, I now have a newer BMW. The turbo 4 is a great engine, and I just wish I could have gotten manual. So, I look at the 1 or 2 series as a suitable replacement. Would be similar size to your current car, better suspension than that saab, decent power and still has a back seat.
Might be hard to find a good example with manual, but I would assume there is a lease return lurking out there somewhere.
I'm only 6 months into ownership, so I can't speak to reliability, or ease of workability. My father in law has an auto 135, and don't think he has had a single problem with it in 3 years.
Back to the refresh of the current saab. I say new suspension all around, replace anything rubber and throw a stage 2 tune at it. Also, maybe clutch and slave cylinder. If the seats are getting worn, have them redone with new foam.
Will be better than a new car.
