Allow me to add two other potentials for you... I own a 2010 Miata (retractable hardtop)as well as 89 900T, and both a recent Volvo S60/V60. As a fun car the Miata is amazing, when the top is down all is right in the world and with the car (@ below freeway speeds). However, I found over time the Miata a poor car to travel more than two hours in or for rush hour commuting in Phoenix (I still don't know why everyone wants to cut you off in a Miata)?!? Miatas are the closest thing I've found to a motorcycle on four wheels and I continue to own it for this, even though my wife doesn't enjoy riding in it.
I was looking at Boxsters, but didn't find them much more comfortable than the Miata, and they didn't look DIY friendly to me. I then stumbled across a 2014 Mercedes SLK with a manual transmission. I have never seen myself as a Mercedes person, but with only 10k miles it was less than half the new sticker price (I paid mid $20k), still had six months of warranty, and the 1.8 turbo is a hoot (the turbo lag reminds me of my 83 900T - fun once you master it). The car drives comfortably, with the sport suspension it handles great, while still being comfortable - a luxury car when wanted and a fun/sporty drive when pushed. It feels much more substantial than the Miata - perhaps even over built. It looks pretty easy to work on, I've had no problems, although the online Mercedes community is nothing like it is for the Saab/Miata/Volvos... If you're in AZ you're welcome to take mine for a spin.
Option #2 - Check out the Fiat 124's, they are a Miata with a Fiat turbo engine (and nicer seats, made in Japan by Mazda). I've seen some one to two year old ones in great shape in the $20k's.
Good luck! Let us know what you get.
Take care,
Scott
