In December of 1984 we upgraded from a 19-inch B&W television with rabbit ears antennas, to a 25-inch Color TV. At that time the cost of cable TV sevice was cost effective compared to the cost of a tower mounted antenna with rotor. So cable TV was added.
Subsequent decades brought attachment to programming not carried by the three major networks, as well as corporate buy-outs of small town CATV providers and multiple price increases as the choice of programs continues to multiply.
What was $15/month grew to $180/month, and we still have only one TV! Unfortunately, cost effective alternatives did not appear until only recently.
