Well the antenna can *definitely* make a difference!
When we got to this house, I fashioned an antenna out of a piece of coax, hooked it to the TV in the living room, and did a channel scan. Result? *Zero* channels.
So I modified the antenna a bit (made it into a loop instead of a straight wire) and attached it to a different wall, an outside wall on the south side of the house... all the transmitters are south of us. Did a scan and... got about 12 channels, with reception ranging from "okay" to "awful".
Then I decided to go all in, bought a very large directional rooftop antenna, and stuck it in the attic. Connected it to the TV in the living room, did a scan, and... 74 channels, most with excellent reception, including all the ones I'm interested in.
FYI as an intermediate step I'd ordered a medium-sized rooftop antenna that received UHF frequencies only. A scan yielded about 60 channels, many of which came in really well, but two that I was interested in didn't come in at all. Long story short it turns out those two channels are broadcast on a VHF-lo frequency, a band which few antennas these days can pick up. So you might want to research the frequencies your local channels broadcast on before choosing an antenna.
