I know they're trucks, and you know they're trucks, but most folks don't. People are using SUV's like cars, and expecting them to be cars. Most folks that buy SUV's expect they have the same safety requirements as cars.
Well, they don't meet the same safety requirements, and maybe that's more a problem with educating the population. But the whole reason for safety requirements is to keep the carnage down to an acceptable level. Seeing as SUV's are bloody well everywhere, they damn well should meet the same safety requirements.
Yes, if somebody buys an unsafe vehicle, it's their own damn fault if they're injured or killed. Should be no skin off my nose. But then again, the more people that are killed or injured in SUV's, the more all our insurance goes up. And maybe that goat-roper in an SUV will flip over on top of me. So as far as I'm concerned, they should meet the same requirements.
