Yeah, maybe. Or maybe we'd be driving on beautifully maintained networks of autobahnen operated by for-profit companies and used by subscribers who willingly pay for their use, and who use them only after demonstrating technical competence. Wouldn't that be an improvement over what we now experience?
There are many models under which highways might have been or might yet be developed. Ours developed under a statist system in which Al Gore and George W. Bush are the best leaders we can expect.
The Erie Canal was built with private investment. The great railroads were built with private investment, though the United Staes incentivized their construction with grants of land (land which, under the Constitution, the United States government never had the right to claim in the first place).
Don't assume that Big Brother is always the best qualified to do everything.
