It makes plenty of sense to rate them along the same lines as cars. If they're sold to the public for use as personal transport, they should have to pass the same standards: performace, safety, economy, emissions.
Maybe then the public will wake up from their stupidity.
In addition, i think the larger ones should require special licenses and safety courses. Also, gas guzzling taxes as applied to cars. They're not trucks people work with and therefore shouldn't get the same (stupid) lack of regulation.
The auto makers have been pushing SUVs because they don't have all the restrictions as cars, are cheaper to make therefore and also they gain more savings because of the cheap truck internals.
If it was up to me, I'd ban them from the roads outright. Only people that can prove they use them off road OFTEN could legally drive them. This will never happen of course, as it would step on people's "rights." Well I'm sure this guy I saw on the news who son died when daddy flipped the SUV on the interstate would give anything to turn back time and have regulations prempting his decision to buy one in the first place. If auto companies had any ethics, they wouldn't make them in the first place. People will say that it was demand that fueled the market, but I beg to differ. Whoever marketed these things as a cool station wagon replacement was both a genius and a real @$$hole.
OK, I've gone over the line here. But I feel better now.
Anyhow...
<--end of my periodic rant against deathUVs-->
I hope that canadian article was right about the SUV sales declining. We can only pray.
