I think your right about a couple of things but lets remember how people get in accidents and that is mainly because of idiots like the Audi driver. Slower traffic should always get out of the way, if possible. If someone is passing on the right lane there is really nothing wrong with this espeically if its a 4-6 lane highway. On the eastcoast the average speed in the left lane is anywhere from 70-90mph in posted 65mph zones. Excessive speeds do cause accidents but so does driving under the flow of traffic. I also understand that your playing the part of is really wrong under the letter of the law. My point is that if your in the left lane driving 65mph in a 65mph zone and someone driver up behind you at 80mph you better get out of the way as for the letter of the law also states the left lane is for passing and the right lanes for slower traffic. Staying in the left lane can result in you getting cut off or even worse shot at.
