Alright, since I'm so freakin sick of everyone and their 'take it to the track' mentality:
Most interstates or sections of interstate were designed for travel well above 65-75 MPH. I travel an average of 50-65K per year and cover much of the US EVERY YEAR! There are times when traffic should be required to travel at 55, 45, or even 35 mph on the highway, but there are just as many times when travel should be a reasonable speed (as is truely stated in most laws). I94, I91, parts of I89, I93, I87, I90, I80 (in areas)..... the list could go on.
Speeds in excess of 85 could be possible if we had a better driver training program as well. I'm young (and I'm sure I'll catch hell from the board), but I consider myself a great driver. I have pulled trucks with trailers in excess of 30 feet across the country. I have driven 45' buses with 16' trailers, I have studied CDL books, etc. Add this to never putting a scratch on a car and maybe you'll agree. The biggest problem I see with drivers in the US is lack of training. 90% have never been anywhere, they rode with parents on the same roads they drive on. The took their tests on these roads, and now they continue to drive these roads. I've seen so many people pass drivers ed not knowing what to do in ANY tough situation. Many people don't even know what to do on the interstate (really? the left lane is for passing?). Maybe if we spent some more time and money on drivers ed we could raise the speed limit without causing more accidents.
I frequently drive my saab over 90mph on the open highway. I slow whenever passing people or in congested areas, there is no point in putting someone elses life at risk, but if I'm confident that I can handle my saab at 90+ on a straight open stretch of highway then who am I hurting?
Lets create a better drivers ed program and raise the speed limit!
p.s. I watched as 3 loaded log trucks had to brake hard and use the left lane so they could pass a little old lady doing 55 on the interstate. Please.... you pass the test once and it's good for life? hey listen, I don't care if you never fall off your bike after you learn, but you can foget how to safely operate a car.... test em again!
There's a rant for ya!
