You said that MS has killed off the competition, and prices have gone down. Yes, but the costs of buying, and owning a computer have also gone down. If there was real competition for Microsoft, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that prices would be even lower? The reason prices are gong down is that MS can be assured to move more volume. XP can ship for $179 because MS knows it will move millions of copies. Win 95 cost more because MS wasn't sure how much it would sell. Thats what the big deal with the anti-trust suits are. And if they got there by using anti-competitive tactics, and not just "smart business", who cares what the outcome is! If I cure cancer by killing 1,000 people in the process, does that make me right or good?

In addition, it is my personal opinion that MS has pandered a whole lot of crap software to the public over the years, which we have bought because there is and was nothing else. Case in point: Office. The Office suite combines some of the worst programs I have ever used. They are so idiot-friendly that anybody with some common sense gets flustered with all the "ease-of-use" features packed in. And from a printer's standpoint, the lack of support for offset printing is insane. When you open a document that was created using fonts that are not loaded in your system, Office will just replace fonts without even letting you know it is doing so. Publisher (the program "designed" for page layout...ha!) you cant even do spot color separations, which is crucial for offset printing. Thats nuts.

In short, MS shippes out half baked products that try to emulate the hard work of other companies, only to fall far short and upset consumers. Many times poeple come to my work with a Publisher document they created, and are upset to find out the that 400 they just spent on buying Publisher was wasted because Publisher cannot do what MS markets it as doing. I have to tell them that they have to go out and buy "real" software.
Sometimes I wish that MS would be responsible and make software that worked.
