As another IT consultant (we specialize in e-mail & AD migration), I wouldn't load anything BUT MS products on a client co. desktops. They're relatively simple for the end user community to use, the Win2K Server w. AD & Win2K pro/XP allows emmense control over the desktop evironment (preventing users from trashing their systems), and they are wide spread enough that data exchange between client sites (Bejing, kamalupor, Bahrain, etc., etc,) is simple. We tried Lotus Notes/Domino as an e-mail & office collabaration system for years a number of sites but the training/support issues are time killers. Three years in a production environment of 4800 users & the helpdesk staff STILL couldn't/wouldn't learn enough about the product to support it at the end user level. I don't mind charging for a 30 minute phone call to fix an obvious/simple problem, but it gets old after a while...
Now don't get me wrong; I'm not an MS supplicant. The Lotus/Domino suite is an excellent package; we use it internally, but it's not something that has a place in an end user population that will not take the time to learn the application.
I'm only using this as an example, but there are many application suites that are more powerful, more secure, and "possibly" a better value for the money. But I won't voluntarily put the in front of the avaerage user.
by the way; we're in the process of migrating all the Lotus Notes users to MS Exchange2K & MS Outlook 2002.....
