I think it's ludicrous to assume that he is "getting what he deserves" or that justice is somehow being served. I don't know if what he was doing was safe or not, but who hear really believes that it is genuinely unsafe to ever go 90mph? And who really believes that a fair punishment is a fine of several hundred dollars and dramatically increased insurance costs for 3 years?
Speed limits are not about safety. If they are, how come when I cross a state line is it suddenly "safe" to drive 10mph faster than previously allowed. Of why am I breaking a law if I'm keeping up with traffic when someone actually going the speed limit is statistically more of a danger. Or why are speed limits the same now as they were 50 years ago when cars are clearly much safer, both actively and passively. Or why do people who tailgate, swerve in traffic, or never indicate not get pulled over, but as soon as you go 10 over the limit, whoa, you're a criminal. The list goes on, but many speeding tickets clearly aren't about safety, they're either about revenue or arbitrary enforcement of a law that cannot be effectively enforced arbitrarily.
And don't even get me started on insurance! I've had a number of speeding tickets but have never had an accident. The insurance company should say this guys a good driver, no accidents, never caught running a stop sign, driving recklessly, etc. But nope, they raise my rates, and I might continue to pay for 3 years because I driving a whopping 11mph over the limit.
trboSwede, you owe it to yourself to at least show up on your court date and talk to the prosecutor. He will likely lower the speed saving you points on your license. Or higher a lawyer, I got a very high ticket dismissed completely and another reduced to 10 over with a lawyer, though I had to pay a hefty fine and lawyers aren't cheap, but for me the savings on insurance were worth it.
Good luck!
