but my advice comes primarily from experience and not school.
Get a lawyer and have him plead faulty/defective equipment. You will end up only paying court fees, no fine for the speeding, and no more than one billable hour for the attorney. Essentially, the lawyer tells the judge that your speedo wasn't working correctly or something to that effect and the speeding charges are dropped. You may or may not be required to later prove to the court that your defective equipment has been fixed (i.e. receipt).
Having said that, the viability of such an argument depends entirely on the laws of the state you were stopped in. The majority of my speeding experiences and the faulty equipment pleas were in Kentucky. I've never been convicted of speeding or paid a dime in penalties because of this loophole. I think I've used this at least ten times in the past although I haven't needed it in the last 5 years or so (I've turned into a safety pup). Your insurance company hears nothing (hence no increased premiums) and you lose no points on your drivers license.
Despite this, let's all try to drive carefully and maintain control. Don't forget that accidents can and do happen--this is something we're all very aware of in light of the Crisman brothers and their tragic accident.
Hope this helps (and that your state laws are favorable for you)....
