MIL SPECs can be very specific. Civilian specs range all over the place. Some aren't very specific at all. SAE oil viscosity specs don't really say anything about chemical composition, so you don't know if the additives are compatible from brand-to-brand.
I've got the manual from my '01 9³ right here. Its got nice specs for oil (API SJ; ACEA A3/B3) & for brake fluid (DOT4). But for coolant, it just says "Saab approved". What does that mean, really?
And like Anders said a little while ago, you've got to be certain what's in there right now. Or flush it good. Mine's kind of blue-colored, but I really don't know what the factory fill is. (Anybody know?)
