As far as new Saabs go and from what I've heard, the 9-5 has been excellent in terms of initial quality and very good in terms of reliability. The previous 9-3 had a number of "quirks" when it was the NG900, but it seems that they got many of them worked out when it became the 9-3. I would be very willing to guess that the 9-3SS should have minimal reliability problems.
As you say, Saabs haven't always been known for the best reliability, but the more current models are supposed to be much better than some of the older models. I have a 1995 9000 Aero, and so far it has been great, and any problems it does have, I just tell people that my car has "personality issues" that need to be worked out.
