It's easy to be critical of a 32 year old design that was designed and built for essentially utilitarian uses. But these things do work well. I've never been in one with under 200K miles (I always look at the odometer) and they work well. Sure, stuff breaks and wears out, and there are 24-hour garages in big cities that do nothing but keep Town Cars racking up the miles. The drivers that I've talked to don't have much of a problem with them.
Fact is, there really aren't many replacements for these workhorse vehicles. Minivans, which are increasingly used as taxis, are not the same, and the core users of Town Cars --such as the clients of car services-- still expect a limo-like car, not a minivan.
