-----------------
1. Free flowing filter may cause less stress on the turbo by allowing the turbo to work less to create the same boost (assuming you agree it is safe to say that a turbo with zero restiction doesn't have to work as hard as turbo with any restriction to create the same amount of boost).
-------------
if this would be true in the case of a 9-3
1) one would see increse in the airmass curve in the region where the wastegate is closed (during spool-up), but there is no difference in those curves.
2) After the WG opens (boost > baseboost)the ecu starts to control the airmass "making the curves same despite of filter" to match the SW target and if there would be less restriction the correlation between boost and airmass would be altered, ie less back pressure (wg more open), better VE = same airmass flow with less boost. Nope this was not noted either.
Remember that boost is caused by restriction and therefore the airmass study is far more accurate.
