Interesting finding...I am dealing with similiar issues with the 9-2x...many aftermarket intake use a large than normal MAF housing which will lean the car out a bit. This will make modest power increases, but can lead to detonation, especially when combined with staged tuning that is designed for a stock sick MAF housing.

The stock intake is not considered restrictive for up to about 350hp, though high flow drop in filters are usually recommended. One important upgrade is to eliminate the pre-airbox resonator and replace with a smooth pipe, and to replace the tubing between the airbox and the turbo with silicone, because it is not smooth or durable. Many people report better acceleration feel and smoother boost build after replacing, but there is little evidence to support more horsepower as a result.
