Very similair issue with WRX's where the difference between the 'reputable' intercoolers and the ebay intercoolers could be as high as $1,200 versus $200. An intercooler is a pretty simple piece and though there is will be small variations based on core and endtank design, using calculations from Bell can give you a pretty good idea of just how much intercooler you need.
There was a lot of noise about the ebay intercoolers being junk and 'made of old tin cans' but people started getting them and trying them out having just as much success as the more notable IC's brands. Despite the fact that there are 100's dyno charts to show that they are as effective as brand name ic's, some people maintain the myth they are junk.
The only real issue is that some of them require a little more customization to make them fit...BUT, I made the mistake of buying a Japanese STi intercooler because it's 15% bigger than the US STi intercooler and is a perfect fit...unfortunately it was not a perfect fit and I needed to do as many small modifications to make it fit as the ebay units. Also even though it a good size, it's a tube and fin design and is more susetable to bent fins than a bar and plate design (from what I understand, for a given core size tube and fin cools a bit better and bar and plate flows a bit better). I spent almost $800 on the Japanese unit when I could have just bought the ebay unit and had $600 more to spend on other mods.
