Hey, what's the point at learning a subject without helping other people along the way and exchanging ideas and information, right?
My brother David and I made a set of headers for our '93 9000 Aero which moves the turbo farther to the left to do just what you are talking about, to make the turn from the turbine outlet down into the exhaust a much straighter shot. I have talked with Dave Kennedy and others about this, and it seems to be a step in the right direction. The tricky part is getting all the other plumbing to line up right, because then you have to redo the intake plumbing, oil and coolant lines to the turbo, and you'd have to make a new downpipe at the same time, so there is a lot that would go into it. If you were making really big steps, it would be the way to go . Dave even has a layout idea for the C900 to put the turbo up under the head like on 9000's to staighten everything out. But you are right, for 95% of people doing a header alone is a big enough improvement that getting the last 5% from opening up the downpipe (which should already be 3") makes things much more expensive and complicated.
Dave, David has been spending a lot of time designing mounts for their Formula car dyno so that he can run their new engine out of the car and get everything set up, so he has been CAMing his own stuff and running their 3-axis (maybe 4? I forget) mill. Stephen told him that when it busied up and were things for him to do he'd have him come back in, but he's not the greatest about bugging people for things to make sure they don't forget him. He is around though. Getting some riding time in on his motorcycle finally.
How have you been? Anything really fun?
I am brainstorming about C900 transmissions in my machine element and manufacturing classes, since I have access to shop space to make reinforcements and improvements.
Best,
Drew
