Just got our Slick Saab a month ago...

The very first time we tried OnStar we were camping with friends up in Sequoia National Forest. We had no reception. IF we had gone into a ditch, and every single airbag had deployed, help would NOT have been on the way.

The second time we tried OnStar, I asked for directions to my Mom's house (as a test)--they were able to locate us (we were driving southbound on Interstate 5) and proceeded to give us directions. But instead of directing us off the 5 to the 805 and then to the 8, they suggested that we stay on the 5 to the 8--by suggesting we forgo a Major Freeway shortcut, they added about 10 extra miles to our journey. Accurate directions, just not very efficient.

My wife and I each have a cell phone and so several of OnStar's benefits are redundant. Since we are already paying monthly for two cell phones, which we use frequently, adding OnStar at the end of our first year doesn't seem to be a foregone conclusion. Oh, and we're also members of AAA.

Just yesterday, we received an OnStar mailer with a wonderful anecdote about some couple driving from Atlanta to Connecticut--about how their car broke down and at the push of a button, the whole town turned out to help...
