I've used Onstar quite a bit in my first few months, and overall it's been better than not having it. Mostly for directions, and since I didn't know where I was or what I was doing, whether they gave me the best route or not, I don't know. But I got where I needed to go. Since I'm in the NYC area my coverage hasn't been an issue, and it has worked in areas where I had no cell reception. I didn't know about the door unlock issue until this thread, and it's good to know, and I would hope Saab would give all owners some type of an addendum to the Onstar ssection in the manual.

A nice to have would be (as is also errantly stated in the Saab manual) traffic condition advisors. When I get jammed up at a bridge or tunnel, I'd like not only to call for an alternate route, but ask whether it's jammed up too. This would have come in handy on more than one occasion (and they say they're going to add it, but my guess is it would get so overused that they'd need to charge a premium for it).

A very important safety feature that I've seen the 'pro - onstar' folks tout is the airbag deployment/accident locator stuff. This is great, but I read somewhere else (not this BB, maybe Edmonds)about Onstar being totally useless should your battery become disconnected in the course of the accident. So not only do you need to remember that if you are in a dead zone they won't know what's going on, but if the accident caused the battery to come undone, they'll have no idea of your plight (there was talk of them perhaps adding a battery backup from a different location to minimize the odds of this occurring -- maybe something Saab could undertake on its own?).

Again, I love Onstar, will renew, and for those who don't, fortunately it didn't cost you anything (on the surface at least). Does anyone know if there any use for this 'already installed' stuff with another service, or for any other non-Onstar functionality for those who choose not to renew?
