I work for Saab. I am the Carline Manager for Future Products and Telematics within our product group.
You are correct that in the event of an accident many people can call in with a cellphone to report an accident. A passing motorist may not have all of the vital information that a 911 operator needs to send help. I sat in the Detroit call center and witnessed an airbag deployment call come in. Within seconds of the accident, a call was made to OnStar's call center. They knew within a couple hundred feet, exactly where the accident was. The Advisor spoke with the driver and he indicated he was ok, however the driver of the other car wasn't. The advisor has a pop up menu on their screen which lists the local phone number of the emergency services provider in the area. Once the Advisor reported the situation to the 911 operator, she got the driver of the car back on the line. Within minutes we could hear the sounds of sirens in the background.
You have to decide if this kind of service is worth your or your family's safety. If you are in the middle of Nowhere, Nevada; you are correct when you say the OnStar system won't work. But neither will a hand held cellphone. There are many trade-offs in this world, some larger than others.
I am sure everyone who drives a 2001 Saab has at least one OnStar horror story. I have mine as well. However, when you wade through the bad there are many more good things to say about the service OnStar provides. OnStar is aware of the fact that the level of service needs to be improved and they are working on this issue.
We decided to make this feature standard, because we believe it provides our customers with another level of safety. We have provided you and all 2001 Saab customers with 12 months of service for you to give it a try. If you decide not to renew your service, that's your choice.
