Doug,
Do you work for OnStar or Saab?
We're talking about the promises presented by OnStar marketing. Many of these promises fall short of the realities we all experience out there.
The promise is that: You crash your car and OnStar calls to help. As you noted, you yourself called in an accident that you observed. I am not nearly as concerned about my wife crashing within the LA metro--I assume that one of the hundreds of cell phone users driving by will call 911 to report the accident. Basically, the problem is this, the more remote you get, the more valuable OnStar would be, but unfortunately the less effective it actually is. I think we need to discuss the analog/digital issue here as well: Most new handhelds, including my 1.5 watt, are tri-band phones (analog/digital/pcs), I understand that OnStar's 3-watt is merely analog.
As for directions, a minor quibble: I was not referring to a "locals only short-cut" in my real-life example, OnStar missed the fact that there is an 8-lane full-on Freeway that provides a much more direct route to my destination. I did not mention the three other actual shortcuts that I routinely take that OnStar missed.
Between our cell phones, our AAA membership, Saab's roadside assistance, and now OnStar, we have many modes of contact and many people looking after us.
It really is a question--is OnStar's Safety and Security plan worth it? It amounts to an insurance policy, and like every insurance policy it needs to be evaluated according to the unique benefits it provides versus it's cost.
I wouldn't have bought a Saab if I wasn't concerned about safety--I bought one "insurance policy" in that sense already. The question is, how much additional insurance do we need?
