Lets take an objective look at OnStar. Fact is, this is little more than a hybrid of telemarketing in reverse. You sign up for a "service" which is provided by too few operators (hopefully not the 911 rejects), likely operating out of a central switching station placed where real estate expenses are low. They don't call you, you call them. OnStar execs know that the vast majority of people will not use their membership (just like health club memberships). They provide nice anecdotes about the service and use the tried-and-true hook of fear to squelch your subconcious which is skeptical (just as it is when your local electronics store tries to sell you a 3 year extended warantee for a mere $70 covering the $100 telephone you just bought).

Without the door unlock feature (something that thankfully happens a heck of alot more frequently than a head-on collision)I cant think of many routine uses for the service. I dont think I need some blue-haired granny located who knows where, making any hotel or restraunt reservations for me while Im on the road (no offence intended to grannys everywhere). When I purchase insurance, I know that if I pay my premium and something happens where I need to invoke the policy, I receive the specified compensation. With OnStar, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Maybe you wait forever for the operator maybe you dont.

If Dianne Warwick and Co. answered the OnStar call and told me my horoscope or became my psychic friend, that would be a better service than what I've got right now. In fact, this isn't a service, its the ultimate automobile-based black hole yet devised, with a selective gravitational pull on your wallet.
