i can tell you that bias is something that never goes away no matter how much you try to avoid it.
for example, i love Saab's and volvo's, but considering that my current employer is GM, i ALWAYS recommend a Saab before a Volvo if someone asks.
the CR writers have always had a trend to lean towards japanese cars than any other origin. They started that way in 1997 and have never went back on it. it keeps them consistent so no one can eye a contradiction in their reports.
Saab 9-5's are reliable for engine and tranny, but b/c of their many different parts and technology, they do get singled out as a 'hassle-to-own' car.
I'll bet you if their was a saab dealer on every corner though...they'd have great reviews. the hassle comes in the rarity of parts and number of bonafide service techs.
