In my issue that came today, the 2004 9-3 has only two excellents, but four worsts, including electrical, brakes, power equipment, and body hardware.
These are problems reported by real owners. This is only the 2004, doesn't include previous 9-3's.
The book you refer to might be last years, when the 2004's were less than one year old. The new report shows the 2005's with several excellents, and one worst, but enough overall black to give it a less than average overall. This is comparing it against other cars.
