As a long-time subscriber to Consumer Reports, I've found them to be a useful as a general guide in making decisions on appliances etc. However, I've never been convinced that they are people who really like cars. For that, I turn to Car&Driver and other auto publications. It seems that Toyota Camry was the apple of CR's eye for a long time, and then VW Passat became their darling for a shorter period, until reports of Passat problems would no longer sustain it. It has been especially maddening to see them grudgingly toss Saab a few kudos, but in the same breath nail them for "quirky engineering" for the key on the floor, or knock them for the missing third station wagon seat. This seems inconsistent for a publication that purports to champion safety.
