Particularily if consumer reports was citing the 9-5 as the most reliable European Auto for 5 years, I'd have to conclude either the rest of the cars out of europe were plain horrible or the data on the 9-5 was statiscally incorrect.
But whether or not you agree with the accuracy of consumer reports reporting, you cannot argue the reliance upon what the magazine says for a great many of the consumers out there. I caught one their editors interviewed on NBC nightly news being asked to comment about why the top 10 2006 autos picked by them were all Japanese - one of his comments were that Ford GM and Chrysler cars exhibit problems after 3 years of ownership that Japanese autos show after 8 years.
So to me that says that the quality specs, both design and component are inferior in the American brands, somewhat better with the europeans, but that the Japanese set a very high bar. JD powers intially quality reports are pretty meaningless IMO.
I don't think that the European makers are necessarily trying to match the Japanese on quality, as they have other desirable attributes which a certain segment of the market values. But if consumer reports black flags your product, tough to argue about the negative impact that can have on numbers of potential buyers considering your product.
While bike riding today saw a chili red 06 9-3ss Aero headed my way, nice looking rig. Too bad CR can't appreciate that.
