The 98-00 HLDI rating for a 9-5 was 55 and for the 5 series 74 (lower is better and this difference is very significant). High dollar cars should also be safe. The 5 series had the worst rating of all the luxury cars except for the 3 series and Mercedes C class. A rating of 74 is only safer than average when nearly all luxury cars were classed much safer than average. Also goes to show what happens when for marketing purposes a manufacturer decides to pass one safety test with flying colors (and then heavily advertize that fact deceitfully)and then ignores all the other things that make a car safe. When BMW gets a consistent safety record, I might buy one, but not until then. I don't think BMW is serious about safety and never has been. Fun and safety aren't mutually exclusive.
