The great info you two have posted is not in dispute. It is expected that BMW would have to display some sort of content differentiation and superiority. Some of it, of course, is quite meaningful, while other features cited are merely trifles. Should we now trot out Night Panel, the way the back seats flip/fold flat, the spotlight, the little clip on the windshield, the newer Michelins, etc etc that the Saab has which the BMW lacks? That misses the point of this particular debate.

Doug mentioned, "The 9-5 is nice, and I would consider it again if the price was a little lower". It is, a lot lower than he posted. He also lamented a lack of TC and ESP on his 99. The 02's have both. Doug's history comments show a bad experience on resale value for his 99, I think I can better appreciate his position having seen that, but it wasn't clear from the first post.

It is no concession to say that the BMW 5-series is demonstrably superior to the Saab in many ways. The inverse is also true (as others have posted re: Safety, space, winter traction).

The point is, for $7-15k premium, the BMW is expected demonstrate a huge difference vs the new 9-5. The buyers of BMW are happy to pay that premium. Me, I'll take that money, buy some value-priced wine, and drink to mutual good fortune for the next 5 years.

Cheers!
