Your comment: "The emphasis should be on the art of driving, but is being replaced by the design of creature comforts." Ties right in with Brian's "comparo" between the 9-5 and the 911. Not that Brian is directly comparing the two (I get that), but his implication--which is the same as yours--that this discussion is *merely* about cupholders is to miss the point.

Here in America people take their families on vacations, or they shuttle friends around, or they simply drink a hot beverage in the morning on their way to work. If their car cannot accomodate these relatively mundane tasks then I guess a hell of a lot of people are out of step with all these highfalutin notions about the "true" reason for driving. We both bought a wagon for many other reasons...

Good comments about the diff between the Accord console--but maybe Saab should just change things around already. Why don't they put the ignition key in another out-of-harm's-way location, perhaps the trunk? ;)
