Studded snow tires (such as nokian hakapelitas) are the biggest
change. Go easy on the brakes too. Find out what level of gentleness
is required to not slide. I do this in my driveway before I go.
If you start to lose grip, let up on the brakes, and try again,
a bit gentler. This is on my 88 900T. I can pass SUVs that couldn't
make it up a hill. From a stop. Tires make the difference. People
whine about the cost of additional tires, but keep in mind that
your normal tires won't wear out while you are using snow's so
you get additional mileage out of them.
Brake sooner so you have more time to slow down. pretend there is
a nice cup of coffee up on the dash and any uneven power or braking
will cause it to spill.
PUtting weight in the car helps with traction, but it's also a
safety issue if you get in an accident, it can become unsecured
and hurt you.
In my Viggen, I can stop twice as quick on ice/packed snow by
controling the brake pedal myself, as opposed to full application
of the brakes and letting ABS stop me. ABS is great on non-snow
though. Of course I don't have snow tires on the Viggen though.
That's one reason I still have the 88 900T.
