Well the dealer was just following the old maxim, "It doesn't hurt to ask." I think you were expected to counter. Last time I bought a new Saab, the dealer's opening gambit was $3000 off sticker, probably right around invoice, or something like that. He was going to keep the $7000 trunk money. So I just said, gee, I'm confused, asked a few questions, indicating along the way that I knew about the incentive, they got serious and a deal was soon made at the correct price.
BTW I told this story once before on this board, and got into a big argument with a guy who sells cars for a living and said that halfway between sticker and invoice is the right price to pay. Yeah, right, the dealer would have made $10,000 gross margin on that deal. Which is fine if somebody wants to pay it, but I didn't. That guy is another adherent of the "It doesn't hurt to ask" school.
In your case, it ••DID•• hurt to ask, because you walked out instead of countering.
