I am sure this will meet with disapproval of some, but Jamie, you did the right thing. I for one get resentful when a sales person is willing to come waaaay, way down or deliberately not inform me of the available discounts or incentives. Did he think I was stupid and therefore was willing to 'cheat' me as I walked in? Just tell me the deals, and lets work from there. I am the same if the agreed upon deal is altered by his boss or 'closer', especially if that person blames the salesperson for unauthorized statements. I portrays a general lack of integrity.
I also have a hard time trusting the service and mechanic staff, when the front end of the dealership is so cavalier and willing to let you get clipped. Makes you feel real good about your fate if going to them if there was an oil sludge problem or other major warranty issue.
I was pleased that when I bought my Saab, this was not the case, but then I bought used. However, even when looking at the new 9-3SS, (really wanted the hatch though) they were forthcoming about the deals at that time. In fact, I almost went for the 9-2X.
But that is me. In a similar vein, when I hire a contractor, before the bid/estimate process, I tell them I want a price that is set, will be valid for a set review period, that I will be seeing other offers, and will not consider signing that same night. That is why when a contractor installing windows or other improvement says if I sign that evening, I can get a 40% discount, I get hat same feeling. I ask if that is an offer that will still be valid for 3 days to allow review of the contract and warranty with an expert. If no, the adios. I do not want to waste either of our times, which is why I stated the conditions up front. If they can afford the discount on Tuesday night, they can afford it Thursday. So far it has worked. Interestingly, the best contractors have also been the ones who also were willing to accept payment upon completion and not the 25% or 50% up front. And no, the cheapest did not always get the deal. (Yes, I did get clipped once by a defaulting general contractor, so once burned...)
