total baloney. This is an endless argument on this site. The best tires on the rear is about 95% tire shop argument to limit liability issues when people only replace 2 tires and the remaining set is pretty well worn. Then it can matter, at least in theory.
I live in northern New England and have been putting the snows with the most tread on the front for 30 years. 2 VWs, 6 Saabs and NEVER an issue across multiple drivers. Especially with ABS, there just isn't much danger of the rear coming around under braking. In fact, I always put the tires with the most tread on the front with my summer tires, too. The tires that do the most work need the most tread.
According to the "best to the rear" theory, if one only ran 2 snow tires, the new snows should go on the back and the half-worn all-seasons up front. The only reason that'd be safer is because you wouldn't make it to the end of the block on a snowy day. And you'd never want to rotate tires either, so you could keep the "best" tires on the back.
Sorry to blow off on this, but this is a tired and lame story that 30 New England winters in FWD cars tells me does not make a snowflake of sense in the real world. It may play well in staged tests on Tire Rack's ice rinks and parking lots, but I just don't see it in typical winter driving.
