From my experiences (which are somewhat limited, but regardless...) the American mentallity on turbochargers and any other similar engine enhancements is "it's just something else to break." It seems like most Americans want their trusty and proven standard V6's and V8's. They look at a I4 turbo as some sort of joke. If you read any article on the base 9-5 (with the I4 turbo with 170HP), 99% of the times they say it's a great car but too expensive for a 4 cylinder engine. Even after driving the car and seeing that the turbocharged engine offers everthing that a V6 does with better fuel economy, they still don't see the benefits. OR, maybe the car manufacturers just can't get the technology worked out without simply copying it from another company like Saab.
Any other thoughts??
